Since 1925, rugs from the Caucasus region have been divided into five groups, one of which is Shirvan. Originating from the eastern Caucasus, these rugs are durable pieces made for everyday use. Older examples, however, are more valuable, as they were knotted entirely from wool and dyed with natural plant colors. Shirvan rugs are adorned with geometric patterns and display various motifs, such as stars or crosses.
Old does not mean outdated. Antique Shirvan rugs are artistically and finely crafted masterpieces. Unfortunately, the artistic quality of more modern rugs from the region is somewhat lower. However, their durability remains unchanged and deserves recognition. This makes Shirvan rugs ideal for areas of the home that experience heavy foot traffic. In an entryway, for example, a Shirvan rug performs wonderfully, easily withstanding the constant trampling of countless shoes. Today’s rugs are dyed with synthetic colors, while earlier ones were treated with plant-based dyes, giving them a particularly beautiful appearance.
